The Browns’ draft haul – which also included UNLV cornerback Eric Wright in the second round – was hailed by most outside observers as one of the league’s best. Savage left no doubt that he felt it was an instance where the team was able to close ground on the rest of the league and, more importantly, its AFC North rivals.
“I really believe that for the Browns, this draft is the pivotal moment where enough of the pieces have been collected so that we can finally look forward to a bright future,” Savage said. “When we got there (two years ago) the infrastructure wasn’t in place, there wasn’t enough from an organizational standpoint off the field – and there certainly hasn’t been enough on the field – to get us where the fans and the media want us to go.
“I feel like we’ve been digging out a hole for two years and every time we take a step up, we get thrown back down. I really believe, though, that we’re right on the edge of having our window open to being a real player in our division and the league. We’re right on the cusp of it.”
