QB possibilities are bubbling in Berea

The concept of Troy Smith as a Round 1 draft pick is going, going, gone.

That flattens his financial prospects but inflates his chance of landing on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River.

"We're looking forward to having him over at our facility," Browns General Manager Phil Savage said at the NFL Combine. "We wanted to run him through the gamut at Berea."

It takes 10 minutes to drive from the 6-foot quarterback's high school alma mater to Cleveland Browns Stadium.

It took three hours for Smith's Heisman Trophy to seem the size of a Cracker Jack prize. In Ohio State's 41-14 loss to Florida on Jan. 8, he went 4-of-14 for 35 yards, with five sacks and an interception.

His stock plunged. Or did it?

"There's this feeling players go up and down, and they're on this roller coaster," Savage said. "Within teams and the evaluation process, there's probably not nearly as much topsy-turveyness as the media would think.

"I'll keep our evaluation of Troy to myself, but it's been pretty steady throughout."

We've been discussing Quinn as a first-round possibility, but could it be that they'll go Johnson or Peterson with that pick and be looking for Troy Smith later in the draft? Savage could be bluffing, but he does seem to sound impressed with the OSU quarterback.

Smith is looking bad in the combine according to the news...he might fall into their lap latter on...

Question is, where do you make the move? You don't want to reach for him, but you don't want to wait too long, either. Third round sound about right, after either Johnson/Peterson in the first and hopefully some OL or DB help in the second round?
