Will The Cleveland Browns Draft Brady Quinn?
Blogcritics.org, OH - Feb 24, 2007
Bless me Lucky Charms: The Cleveland Browns are drafting #3 in the 2007 NFL Draft. All the unicorns and leprechauns in my little Brownie universe, it seems, have aligned. The Cleveland Browns — and their Death Star of a franchise — are in the right orbit now to draft Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.

The only question now is this: Will they pull the trigger?

No doubt, the Browns — like most of the special children in my universe — have a lot of needs. Offensive linemen, a top-notch cornerback, a stud running back to bash his way out of the backfield, and even a feisty water boy with a heart of gold are on the top of their wish list.

So, the question remains, who should they select with such a high pick?

My rule of thumb is you never pass up a potential franchise player with a lofty draft pick in the NFL. Yes, the Cleveland Browns desperately need a star lineman to keep their future quarterback from continually chewing turf on the shores of Lake Erie. Yes, the Browns need a running back who could beat both The Flash and Superman in a foot race around the globe.

But, unfortunately, I truly believe that the Cleveland Browns need a quarterback with a rocket-to-you arm and all the mechanics to just win, baby, win.

Re: Browns drafting Brady Quinn?

I hope not.

Granted, quarterback is a need, but I am hesistant to pull the trigger right now. Frye was ugly to watch at times this season, but he still has the desire and work ethic that give hope. Personally, I think drafting Calvin Johnson or trading down are the best options.

Re: Browns drafting Brady Quinn?

I agree completely. There are needs more pressing than QB, and Quinn's not a slam-dunk guy. I'm not sold on him.

See now, I am a gambler...I would roll the die with Quinn...anyone can take the safe bet that is CJ...and trading downs is for punks...got to go with my boy Quinn...

Is that kind of safe thinking that's gonna lose you a GTG fantasy baseball title there Lefty...

Well, if we were talking Adrian Peterson, I might be willing to gamble, because the reward part of the risk-reward scenario would be potentially higher. But Quinn just isn't a big game QB. I don't think he has the tools to succeed in the National Football League. Johnson is the safest pick, Peterson would be second best. QB should not be a priority, not at #3. Wait till the second round and see who you can get there.

Yeah I agree the Browns have too many holes to fill defensively particularly in the secondary. Plus I think that Charlie Frye is going to be a very good QB in time.

There's risk taking, and then there's blowing your entire paycheck on lottery tickets. Drafting Quinn falls into the latter category, not the former. I'm all for calculated risks, but this would be a truly foolish move.

See you almost had the makings of a good argument until you said that Quinn is the equivalent of a bunch of lotto tickets...

You are placing way too much stock on one little LSU game... the kid has the right stuff...right now he is not the darling that is Johnson, but good QBs are not made in the scouting combine...Quinn is a bit of risk...but tell me with a straight face that Charlie Fyre will lead the Browns into the playoffs?...

Roll the die baby, Roll the die!

Now see, I should be insulted that you think my opinions are based entirely off the LSU game. I watched every Irish game this season. His performances against UCLA, USC and Michigan State were pretty lousy as well. I'm not thrilled with his decision making, and he has shown a tendancy to get rattled under pressure. He's not gonna be a Ryan Leaf-type bust or anything, but anyone expecting him to be the second coming of Tom Brady just because Weis was his coach is sorely mistaken.

That's okay man, I am an equal opportunity offender...

But yes, I would say that while the LSU game didn't totally form your opinion, I would be hard press to say it did not strongly color it...

You were high on this kid for the past year, and now he is what was the word?..."as a good a risk as a lotto ticket?"...and yeah, I would bet a second Tom Brady over a Ryan Leaf...Weis has nothing to do with it...Quinn played on an over rated team...Brady got lucky to land on the Patriots...

I also think for the ton of expectations and Heisman hype the guy had while on a so-so team, he handled things pretty well.

Re: Browns drafting Brady Quinn?

Hmm... yeah, I see where in another thread I said that he looked to be the "real deal" -- surprises me, really, that I said that, especially since after the Michigan game I said "He's struggling this season - I don't know if the pressure's getting to him, or opposing defensive coaches have figured out that you can rattle him with the blitz, or what. But he just doesn't seem like the same QB to me." Bottom line is he needs to go to a team with a good o-line (not Cleveland) and he needs a QB coach who can help him deal with the blitz. Cleveland would be best served trading down out of this slot and snagging extra picks.

See, I can live with that take...that's far removed from "buy some lotto ticket...the Browns are not ideal for a QB that needs some development.

Having said that, I still like the kid...I think he will be jsut fine.

Charlie Frye will lead the Browns into the playoffs. This was his first full year starting and he was hurt a good part of it. Even Peyton Manning needed time to develop. Speaking of Peyton, you give that piece of human garbage Peyton's adopted (?) brother Eli Manning all the time in the world to throw interceptions and miss recievers with a great running game to support him so give Frye just a little time to learn the NFL please?
