| Re: Browns drafting Brady Quinn? If all other options are exhausted, which they won't be, then I guess I would have no problem drafting Brady Quinn.
Even if we put aside the questions about Brady Quinn as a prospect, this franchise isn't a prime candidate for grabbing quarterback. Charlie Frye was awfully inconsistent this year, but I think you have to give him one more season to prove or disprove the notion that he can be a successful starting quarterback in the NFL. Personally, I would err towards the side which thinks he isn't, but I want to be absolutely certain that he isn't before I go out and dump in excess of $40 million on a young signal-caller with his fair share of criticism, some deserved and some undeserved.
In my opinion, you supply the trenches with talented bodies, establish a respectable ground game, reinforce the perimeters with skill players, and install a familiar offense to the players around him before you take the plunge into drafting a high quarterback. Arguably, the Browns have one of the four. Throwing any rookie quarterback into that unfavorable set of circumstances isn't conducive to success or consistent with previous results. I'm not suggesting that every quarterback will fail, but lack of identity in several key facets of an offense tends to breed disappointment. You can still hit, but the odds you miss are also higher.
Stockpiling draft picks and addressing the numerous needs of the team at left tackle, left guard, center, right guard, right tackle, running back, defensive end, nose tackle, and cornerback all need to be taken care of too. It's not like the Browns are a quarterback away from the Promised Land. |
