COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- James Davis guaranteed a Clemson victory, then made it happen. Davis ran for 129 yards and a touchdown, Cullen Harper threw for two scores, and the Tigers cruised past mistake-prone Maryland 30-17 Saturday. Early in the week, Davis declared, "We're going to win, guaranteed." The junior tailback said he was merely responding to a comment by Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen, who said he "expects to win" despite fielding a team decimated by injuries.
"I didn't do that to disrespect (the Terrapins), I did it to motivate my guys to get my guys ready to go," Davis said. "I was sweating on the bus thinking about it. What would have happened if you don't win?"
