Ken Griffey Jr. is getting No Love!

If you’re scanning a sports website or TV channel this week, you’ll see tons of news on the NBA playoffs, or Tiger Woods hurting his poor knee. What you WON’T see is much of any celebration on Ken Griffey Jr. approaching the 600th home run milestone. I believe this is so unfair and hypocritical because Ken Griffey may be the first player in the last 35 years to reach 600 without cheating. He’s being forced to quietly make history in the shadows.

As much negative press ESPN gave Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa for their alleged steroid use, you’d think they would take the initiative and celebrate a man who did things the right way.
Griffey isn’t receiving special “home run countdowns” from the worldwide leader in sports. ESPN doesn’t cut into other programs with live at-bats of Ken stepping to the plate. As much as I watch ESPN, I believe they have to be held accountable for their actions. It makes me absolutely sick to see their analysts gang up, pile on, and turn up their noses at Barry Bonds yet not publicize something positive. They aren’t in the business of promoting or protecting the sanctity of sports, they’re in the business of sensationalizing everything for ratings.
The saddest part of all of this is I’ll be watching Pardon The Interruption tomorrow afternoon like nothing happened. I make myself sick.

Where’s All The Hoopla For Ken Griffey Jr’s 600th Home Run?

I agree, ESPN must only want to cover the controversially players
Imagine where Jr might be if his body didn't fall apart when he got to Cincy, we might be talking 700 or more.

He has 597 as of right now. I think he averaged 36 or 37 homers in Seattle and 22 or so homers since he went to Cincy.

Do you think he'll call it quits after this year ? He'll be 40 next year.

I haven't heard any retirement hints. He might, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him back for another year or two, really.

I still say Jr. Griffey has the nicest swing I have ever seen... Good for him!

ESPN was in beds with Bonds with his half-baked reality show, so they were always going to feature him in some way. Griffey's injury plagued years have really hurt his visability in my opinion. Had he stayed healthy and been in a different market, he would have made a much bigger splash. His accomplishments are to be commended, that's for sure.

Ding ding, that is the answer. All those years wasted by injury and the fact that Cincy has been bad (haven't been over .500 since 2000) has made him sort of fall out of the national spotlight.

He will actually be 39 during the season, but I see him going for a couple more years. Man, it's hard to believe that he is that old (seems like he should be mid 30's at most). Makes me feel old since I have been of fan of his since the early 90's.

He has made hints that after his contract with the Reds is up he would like to return to Seattle. That would be a nice end for a great career.
