I just read that the Reds are working on a trade with the Oakland A's for Joe Blanton. The holdup right now is their asking price. They want Homer Bailey or Johnny Cueto, Joey Votto, and another player.

Blanton may be a good pitcher, but that is too much to give up. Bailey and Cueto are projected to be number 1 starters and very close to being ready. Votto is already being thought of as the teams 1B. All this for a number 3 starter. If they wouldn't give up this much to get Bedard, they would be stupid to make this trade.

Your reasoning is smart. No matter what, Blanton is a solid #3 starter. Is that worth giving up potentially better pitchers? Do you want to take a chance that one of them bottoms out and turns into nothing?

Not only is Blanton only a #3, he would also have to pitch in Cincy which is more of a hitter's ball park...so I don't think he will improve on what we have seen already.
