The Reds picked up the options for Hatteberg and Valentin. I don't see either of these as a suprise. They love Hatteberg for his bat off the bench, and maybe spelling Votto at 1B...the job is his next season.

Valentin will be kept because for some reason the Reds can not seem to get enough catchers. They carry 3 during the season.

Valentin doesn't seem like a good player, but a serviceable one...if that makes sense. Why do the Reds carry 3 catchers most of the season?

I don't really know why. I have not been able to figure it out. This year they had Ross, Valentin, and Moeller. The year before they had LaRue in Moeller's spot. I think they are looking for the next Johnny Bench. They waste a roster spot that could be used for a rookie, or another bullpen pitcher. Lord knows they could use the help there.
