Dusty Baker Agrees To Manage Reds

Dusty Baker has agreed to a three-year deal to manage the Cincinnati Reds, beginning with the upcoming season, ESPN has learned.

Baker, a former Cubs and Giants manager and current ESPN analyst, will continue to work with ESPN through this season's League Championship Series and World Series.

Baker is expected to be introduced at a news conference in Cincinnati on Monday.

He's a decent manager. They could have done better IMO. Still, they need to get some players in Cincy (PITCHING) or else it won't matter who they hire.

So Mackanin gets the shaft after all, eh? Shame. They should've given him a full season to run the team.

I agree. He should have been given a shot. I read this at work last night and almost felt like I had to go home. If I remember correctly, one of the biggest criticisms of Baker was his inability to handle a pitching staff. How is he going to be able to help the Reds when that is already the biggest glaring weakness?

Re: Dusty Baker Agrees To Manage Reds

I thought I would check in with Reds fans and see how you guys are liking Dusty so far? As a Cubs fan I loved him the first year and then I realized how bad of a manager he truly is, but he was always good for an interesting quote.

Re: Dusty Baker Agrees To Manage Reds

Oh, and I have to ask, has he given you guys any interesting quotes? Here is my personal favorite from his Cub days.

It's just like fishing. You're going striped bass fishing. You've got birds on top and you follow the birds. Where the birds are, the bait fish are below that. Below the bait fish are the striped bass. That's what you want to do. That's how you want to do your lineup. That way they can't escape. That's how I try to make my lineup out so the opposition can't pitch around this guy or that guy and that guy and can't escape. You try to get them in the crossfire.
