Cool 2007 Cincinnati Reds Prediction

Quote:

RP Kerry Ligtenberg (Invited to Camp)
OF Josh Hamilton (Traded from Cubs)
SP Kirk Saarloos (Traded from Athletics)

SS Royce Clayton (Signed with Blue Jays)
SP Ryan Franklin (Signed with Cardinals)

SP Brandon Claussen (Signed with Nationals)

The Skinny: After a very surprising and promising 2006, the Cincinnati Reds are looking for more in 2007. They received excellent production from the big two at the top of the rotation, while the offense once again powered them to victories. The team returns pretty much the same cast of characters from last year, but they have added some arms to help strengthen up a weak bullpen.

Strengths: The power bats should come out once again. This squad finished second in the National League last year in home runs, and it returns many of the same players. Adam Dunn will hit around 45 with plenty of walks and strikeouts, Ken Griffey Jr. can be counted on for 25 more, while catcher David Ross surprised the team with 21 blasts in only 247 ABs. (Read that again.)

The rotation should have earned the nickname “Arroyo and Harang, and then a bang” last season. Both Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang did excellent work, and they should be considered legitimate pitchers for this year. Harang led the National League in strikeouts -- bet you didn’t know that -- but Arroyo will probably decline a little bit this year. He still will be better than most of the guys the Reds run out there.

Weaknesses: The bang that comes after the big two in Cincinnati is the remainder of the rotation. If the season started today, Eric Milton would be the number three guy, followed by Kyle Lohse and Kirk Saarloos. While these vets have had some success in the past, they’re nothing more than guys whose ERAs will be over 4.70. Expect their bullpen to be run ragged by the middle of the hot Cincinnati summer.

Potential Lineup:

(2B/SS/3B/OF Ryan Freel – he will be batting leadoff nearly everyday, where he plays depends on who’s sitting)
2B/SS Brandon Phillips
RF Ken Griffey Jr.
LF Adam Dunn
1B Scott Hatteberg
C David Ross
SS Alex Gonzalez
CF Josh Hamilton
3B Edwin Encarnacion

Keys to Success: For the Reds to be successful this upcoming season, they don’t need for a whole lot to happen. Guys like Eric Milton, Kyle Lohse, and Kirk Saarloos need to give innings, so the bullpen, which has a chance to be decent, doesn’t have to come in early into games so often. Good innings from the back of their rotation bodes success. If they don’t perform well, then the chants for Homer Bailey will begin.
2007 Cincinnati Reds Team Preview
ThePundit's prediction: 6th in NL Central. Sorry Azrael, Besides having two good starting pitchers, I don't think there's much to get excited about. Mike Stanton and David Weather's closing?

I hear Narron is going to experiment with his lineup this season. He wants to break up the right and left handed bats.

1. CF Ryan Freel - Will lead off and be the starting CF no matter how great Hamilton has played ( at least until he gets hurt)

2. LF Adam Dunn - I believe Narron has lost his mind if he bats dunn 2nd. I protested this in another post.

3. Brandon Phillips- Hoping to repeat strong season
4. Ken Griffey Jr. - Until he goes on the DL.
5. Edwin Encarnacion
6. Scott Hatteberg- May change with the platoon with Conine
7. Alex Gonzalez
8. David Ross- Also hoping to continue success from last year.
9. Pitcher

Some other things I have heard about the pitching.

Lohse is probably going to take the #3 spot from Milton. In fact they thought about not putting him on the roster, but he would not accept a minor league assignment, and they are paying him too much to eat the contract. It looks like Milton will be the 5th starter. He has had that poor of a spring.

Saarloos is most definitely going to be long relief out of the bullpen. From what I am gathering, they are eyeing Matt Belisle or Bobby Livingston for the other SP spot.

More on Milton:

Matt Belisle has a 2.08 ERA; Bobby Livingston has a 1.23 ERA and one of them is going to start the year in Triple-A. Milton is 16-23 with 5.89 ERA in two years with the Reds. Why is he beign handed a starting job???

They are not going to be an exciting team this year that is for sure, but I see them in 3rd at the end. St Louis and Houston will fight it out again. They say Hermanson is pitching pretty well this spring. He is slated to be the closer. Both of these predictions could be way off too. Krivsky could make another trade to ruin the team even more. he is not afraid to pull the trigger.
