Best Bet at Second: Womack? Aurilia?

Interesting 3/6 column by Lonnie Wheeler of the Cincinnati Post.

Quote:
Of the 62 players in the Reds training camp, all but two lefties and a veteran catcher, it seems, are trying to win the starting second-base job. The smart money is on Tony Womack.

...

It appears that the youngest candidates, Ray Olmedo and William Bergolla, aren't serious candidates. Rich Aurilia, who finished last season playing well at second, has started one Grapefruit game at third and another at shortstop. Duty could call him anywhere, as it so often does Ryan Freel. At 35, Frank Menechino has been a regular only once in his eight American League seasons.
It doesn't sound as though the Reds have a whole choose from here, at least Wheeler makes it sound that way. But Womack and Aurilia are both at least half-decent players who might have a positive impact on the club. What do you Reds fans think? Who do you want starting at 2B?

Re: Best Bet at Second: Womack? Aurilia?

If Womack's year with the Yankees are any indication, then they should go with anybody else but him. But it could be that he just couldn't handle the American League.
How about this idea. Trade Griffey to the Reds for Soriano. Let him play second this year. I think his contract is up after the season, so they could let him walk if they don't want to pay him. They seem to want to unload Griffey, but he looks to be in pretty good form at the WBC.

That would make sense. The Reds are four deep in the OF and need someone at second, while Washington's trying to force Soriano into the OF. This way, the Nationals get their outfielder and the Reds get their second baseman. I like it, legend. Now call their GMs and see if we can't get this thing done!

I'd estimate that's .20 more than Mariano Duncan's.
