Reds Sign Alex Gonzalez for SS

Peter Gammons reports the Cincinnati Reds have signed SS Alex Gonzalez to a 3-year, $14 Million deal.

That's a pretty high amount for a guy who almost never produces with the bat. But I guess they didn't sign him for his offense. He's been one of the best defensive shortstops in the game over the past 3-4 years.

He should help the team who had one of the worst defensive infields in the game last season.

I think the Reds got Stanton today too...

Nice deal for Cincinnati, they needed some good infield defense.

I always liked Alex Gonzalez, because of his speed (and there was another guy called Alex S. Gonzalez)

Stanton has always been one of my favorite guys out of the pen.

The Reds might be a contender in a few years.

Re: Reds Sign Alex Gonzalez for SS

The Reds are my first love in sports, and I am not happy with this signing. What we need now is some scoring. They now have a decent pitching staff with Harang, Arroyo, Milton, Lohse, and Elizardo Ramirez should come back. At time last year he looked like a stud. They have Homer Bailey ready to come up this year. The moves Krivsky made during the season gives us a good bullpen minus a closer. They should have gone after a good 2B and moved Phillips back to SS which is his natural position. Gonzalez does have a little power which should be enhanced at GABP, but he is not the answer. The reason the reds missed the playoffs last year was not pitching or defense. They quit scoring runs. They need to get some bats to replace the ones they gave away.
