Looking to 2007, with Perry facing more major rehabilitation and unable to put weight on his left ankle, the Bengals decided to invest their second-round draft pick in another running back - Auburn's Kenny Irons - who could complement featured back Rudi Johnson.
Perry, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2004, is not expected back until late October at the earliest.
"You certainly can't go into the season with one (running back)," Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said Saturday, when the team held the third and fourth practices of its mandatory minicamp.
"You never know what's going to happen. (Running backs) get hit on every play. In some cases, you have to have three."
