Mailbag: Why are the Sox shopping Dye?

Quote:
I don't agree with the clamor to trade Jermaine Dye. Yes, he is slowing down in the outfield (and the basepaths), but what he lacks in range, he makes up for in hustle and desire. At the plate, he is extremely solid.
-- Tim, Chicago
There really isn't a clamor to trade Dye, per se. It's more about general manager Ken Williams listening to offers for the veteran with the highest trade value on the roster, backing up his much talked about plan to keep the team as a contender in the present, while looking toward future success. I agree with everything you said about the valuable Dye, and his defense last year was as good as I've seen from him since 2005.

While Dye isn't my favorite Sox player, he is definately solid behind the plate and he still has a little something defensively.

It's good to see another fellow WHITE Sox fan here on Go Teams Go. About Dye......he is our best trading chip right now. Trading him would open up a spot for Carlos Quentin to play his natural position in RF.

Also, we might be able to trade him to fill one of our needs at CF/2B/SP or Leadoff hitter. I think it would be a good idea for us to break up the big three of Dye, Thome, and Konerko.

They're all slow, lumbering, swing for the fences guys who are getting up there in age and we need younger, more athletic players who can hit in the clutch and steal some bases not just hit home runs all the time.

I think the White Sox should keep him. He can still hit OK.

I have to agree with you about Paulie and Thome. Dye isn't the best hitter either, but he has something. But Paulie and Thome are definately not the greatest for us.

Was it Thome that had that big homerun that got the Sox into the play-offs?

Re: Mailbag: Why are the Sox shopping Dye?

Jermaine Dye is, arguably, one of the most offensively productive players in the baseball. He is consistent and is always reliable when he's at the plate. But, with that being said, it is a smart move for the White Sox to trade him. He's not getting any younger and if we don't move him soon, we're not going to be able to get anything for him when we would try to trade him later on down the road.

The same goes for Konerko. Sure, he's a good player, but he's slowly inching past his prime and we need to shop him around to see what we could get.

Yeah Thome and Paulie are pretty much the same hitter but from opposite sides of the plate. Thome did come up big for us on opening day though....3 hits including the game-winning 3-run homer.
