MESA, Ariz. -- For the second straight year, one of the most dominating relievers in the National League lost the battle for the Cubs' closer job.
And this time a clearly disappointed Carlos Marmol suggested the team didn't seriously consider him for the role.
When asked whether he thought leaving camp for the World Baseball Classic might have hurt his chances to win the job over newcomer Kevin Gregg, Marmol said, "I don' t think it made a difference. I think they knew what they [wanted] to do before I got here. That's why I say there's not a competition." Manager Lou Piniella said Gregg's nearly-spotless spring and the fact the former Florida Marlin has experience in the ninth inning gave him the job.
