Cubs calling up Ascanio?

LOS ANGELES -- Cubs manager Lou Piniella said adding a 13th pitcher this week has curbed his fear about what extra innings might do to his staff. But so far it hasn't done much to ease his mind over some of the earlier innings.

Piniella wants to be able to get more than one quality inning at a time out of his middle relievers, he said, and plans to look into calling right-hander Jose Ascanio back from AAA Iowa.

''I was pleased when Ascanio was here,'' Piniella said of the rookie who pitched two scoreless innings in his Cubs debut May 20 and had a 1.80 ERA in four appearances.

Lou won't be happy until he has a 15 man pitching staff.

Re: Cubs calling up Ascanio?

If Piniella liked this kid so much, why'd he get sent back down in the first place?
