And those with an insight into the proposed sale indicate Cuban is no longer the dark horse he once was considered when he initially expressed interest last year.

Cuban became a billionaire with his innovative Internet ventures and is believed to have the resources to swing a quick deal for the Cubs. Zell -- the profanity-spewing billionaire who bought Tribune Co. last year -- certainly would have no problems doing business with Cuban.

The stumbling block always has been MLB's stodgy owners approving the next owner of the Cubs. Commissioner Bud Selig has taken a special interest in the Cubs and would seem to clash with Cuban.

But Zell, who is reportedly $12.8 billion in debt, almost certainly will insist on getting the highest bid for his team, and Cuban appears poised to spend what it takes.

I would love to see him get a baseball team. He is a great owner that falls in love with his team. I wish he would have gone after the Pirates as it was reported a few years ago. he could have really help a mid market team.

I would love to see Cuban get the Cubs. He is what you want out of an owner, he has great passion and he wants to win and will do what it takes to get there. I do not know how keen MLB is on the idea of Cuban, but it does seem more probable then last year.

I don't see how they can argue. Look at what he has done in the NBA. He turned around a losing franchise and made them contenders every year.

Not to mention what he was done for the game overall, he has helped to make some changes, not he could possibly start a youth movement on the good old boy chain known as the MLB owners.

Bud Selig doesn't like his antics and there are also a handful of powerful owners that really dislike him. Remember that if he agrees to buy the team, he still goes through an approval process and if he passes that, the owners have to vote to approve him. Based on that Cuban has an uphill battle.

how many votes would it take to keep him out? I think if he makes it past Selig all he has to do is show the other owners that he will make the league money. Most of the mid market teams will love him for the luxury tax he will spend.

I am not sure, probably majority. The scary thing with that is the owners I mentioned that really dislike Cuban, they will surely be lobbying others to vote against him. Jerry Reinsdorf of the White Sox will be leading that charge.
