MESA, Ariz. -- In the end, the makeup of the Cubs' starting rotation had as much to do with deals that didn't get done as what the pitchers got done on the field this spring.
And that remains one of the reasons the rotation that includes Ryan Dempster and Jason Marquis -- but not Jon Lieber -- may not stay intact as long as it took to assemble.
''Like I told [Lieber], when this is all said and done, we're going to need more than five starters, believe me,'' said manager Lou Piniella, who came close to settling his Opening Day pitching staff Monday when he named Dempster and Marquis to the rotation, Lieber to the bullpen and Kerry Wood the closer.
