TUCSON, Ariz. -- So much for that abundance of great arms the Cubs had stockpiled when spring training opened.

Forget trading for Brian Roberts and Coco Crisp -- the Cubs might have trouble getting Tanner Boyle and Timmy Lupus for some of these guys right now.

''I don't like the idea of our pitching staff getting hit around, whether it's spring training or playing tiddlywinks,'' manager Lou Piniella said. ''I mean, we're giving up seven runs a game down here, and we've got to get better at that.''


Those comments came before Ed Campusano and Tim Lahey turned a 4-1 lead into a 5-4 loss to Arizona with their work in the eighth inning Wednesday.
