Cubs ink deal with Zambrano

So the Cubs and Carlos Zambrano finally came to a deal. Zambrano signed a 5 year, 91.5 million deal with a vesting option for the 6th year. I'm so excited about this. I would have hated to have seen him in yankee pinstripes next year.

Re: Cubs ink deal with Zambrano

He was going to get paid one way or another, good (and obvious) decision by the Cubs here. If he can keep his emotions in check, he could be one of the great pitchers over his career.

Wow!...not Prior or Woods...look who lands the big, big deal in Chicago...for that money, I expect a lot more quality starts from Zambrano...can't have him stop after a few innings with a hydration problem...

Re: Cubs ink deal with Zambrano

According to the AP, he is the highest paid pitcher with a multi-year contract and the fifth highest paid player in baseball behind Roger Clemens ($28 million), Alex Rodriguez ($25.2 million), Manny Ramirez ($20 million) and Derek Jeter ($18.9 million). Zambrano will average $18.3 million per season and will have a full no-trade clause. Anyone think the Cubbies might have overpaid for him? Is Zambrano really worth a top five salary?

Whether he is or not, he would have gotten that kind of money if he would have tested the free agent market this offseason. The Cubs were smart to keep the best pitcher they have.

Yeah me... is not a top 5 pitcher...much less a top 5 player...way over the top...

Agreed. For that money I think I might've been tempted to let him walk, market value be damned.

Re: Cubs ink deal with Zambrano

Without him, are the Cubs a playoff team? Nope.

He is one of the best pitchers in the NL. He's now paid like it.

I don't think so. His ERA and WHIP are not among the league's best.

His walk and HR allowed totals are high.

Compared to others in the NL who have thrown more innings, Zambrano has allowed more earned runs or hits (Harang, Hudson, Oswalt, Webb).

He has more losses than any other top pitcher in the NL. He does share the league lead though in wins.

IMO, he's not the best...but he is one of them.

Heck, it's debatable that they're a playoff team WITH him.

He's good, and he's a difference maker, but Soriano's far more important for them in terms of making a playoff run.
