Cool Greg Maddux shines

CHICAGO (AP) -- Greg Maddux final performance as a 30-something pitcher was like so many others during his long career. Efficient, quick and well-conceived.
Now it's time to move on. To his next start in five days and to another decade of life. He turns 40 in two days. And what's he expecting from that milestone? "Hopefully the same as the 30s," he said Wednesday after beating the Reds 4-1 for his 320th career win. "I don't know. We'll see. I've never been 40 before."

Not bad for the once former skinny pitcher with the over 5.00 ERA when he started with the Cubs back in the late 80's.

I hope he keeps this up. I have him on my fantasy team.

Re: Greg Maddux shines

Maddux's ERA in two starts this season is 1.48, and he struck out even in his six innings yesterday. Even going on 40, he continues to be one of the best pitchers in the league today, not to mention one of the best ever. Simply amazing...

Re: Greg Maddux shines

How about this stat from "Mike & Mike" this morning: Since World War II, no pitcher in baseball had more wins before his 40th birthday than Greg Maddux. That deserves a 'wow' don't you think?

Another great performance from the now 40-year-old Maddux yesterday. Eight innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 6 strikeouts against the Dodgers. Maddux is now 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA and shows no signs of slowing down.

That's because he is a "pitcher" not a thrower...he relies on control and smarts not a +90 mph fastball...

Re: Greg Maddux shines

Greg Maddux is a class act. A true professional all the way. I still can't believe the Cubs have the guy. He kind of seems to be too good to be on the Cubs squad. I mean don't get me wrong...I'm glad he's there...but it's no surprise that he had the prime of his career in Atlanta.

Re: Greg Maddux shines

The Cubs would have a great pitching staff if all their starters were healthy (Prior and Wood).
