Chicago close to signing Cliff Floyd

According to the Associated Press, "Cliff Floyd and the Chicago Cubs are nearing agreement on a one-year contract, a deal that may include an option for 2008 that the outfielder can control." Floyd was injured last year, but he's a career .279 hitter and, more importantly, he's a left-handed bat. I think it'd be a good idea for the Cubbies to sign him. What do you guys think?

Heck yes it would. You would have Soriano in left, Floyd in Center, and Jones in Right. That would be a nice outfield. I def think that the Cubs need to sign him up.

CHICAGO -- Cliff Floyd and the Chicago Cubs are nearing agreement on a one-year contract, a deal that may include an option for 2008 that the outfielder can control. Floyd, who was born in Chicago, is likely to make a decision this week. Several AL West teams and Pittsburgh also have shown interest in the 34-year-old left-handed hitter -- Pirates manager Jim Tracy managed Floyd at Double-A.
Limited to 332 at-bats last year with the New York Mets because of an injured Achilles tendon, Floyd likely would be a backup with Chicago. Alfonso Soriano probably will wind up in center, with Matt Murton in left and Jacque Jones in right.
Floyd hit .244 with 11 homers and 44 RBIs last season, and had surgery on his left foot in October. New York replaced him in left with Moises Alou, a free agent who agreed to a contract in October.
An All-Star in 2001 with Florida, Floyd hit .273 with 34 homers and 98 RBIs for the Mets in 2005.
His talks with the Cubs were reported Sunday by the Chicago Sun-Times.
That is from Cubs.com. So I was wrong. It could Murton in Left, Jones in center, and Soriano in Right. Or Soriano in Center. Either of these scenarios would work I think.

I would still keep Soriano in left. They have a young kid, Felix Pie, that is supposed to be ready this year to play center. I have heard great things about him. Does anybody besides the Yankees have a more potent offense that the Cubs?? With the possible addition of Floyd, they will be deep too.

I think he's about locked with the Cubs.

SI.com - MLB - Cubs, Floyd closing in on one-year contract - Sunday January 21, 2007 11:23PM

The deal hasn't been finalized, but I can't see him walking out.
