Greg Maddux Retire?

Lost admist all of the Roger Clemens retirement talk is the speculation that this may be the final season for 39-year-old Greg Maddux. He was 13-15 in 2005 with a 4.24 ERA, and led the Cubbies with 225 innings pitched. However, it also marked the first time since 1987 that the 300 game winner failed to earn at least 15 W's in a season. All good things must come to an end, I suppose, but I for one will be sad to see Maddux go if indeed this year will be his swan song.

greg

maddox has had a great career. he has maximized his potent ial with great control and accurancy. if he does not have it he wont be successful. he is one of the few remaining great pitchers in baseball today. if he cant do it anymore, it will be sad to see him go

talk softly and carry a big....sinking fastball

I applaud Greg Maddux. He is a man among men. I just love the way Greg goes about his business quietly and like a brain surgeon. He is meticulous in the way he pitches and never toots his own horn. I think its only right that Greg #31 goes out the same way that he has won a Cy Young and has been one of the top five pitchers in the game over the last ten years....QUIETLY. Way to go Greg on letting your actions on the field speak louder than the press.

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

I used to go watch Greg Maddux pitch when when I was little and he was playing the Peoria Chiefs. It's amazing to me that as a pitcher, he's still in the game. He seems to be sliding, but he can still outpitch 90% of the youngsters in the league. He has to be getting tired and he can't be hurting for money. Good for him if he retires. It will be a blow to the injury prone pitching staff, but he's a future hall of famer with a great career behind him.

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

Think he's a first ballot Hall of Famer? I'd definitely say yes, but the baseball writers scare me sometimes...

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

Depends on who he has teed off over the years I guess, although he certainly doesn't seem to be a guy that made many enemies. The Hall of Fame needs a beter way to elect its members, than relying on the writers to do it. Maddux is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

If the Baseball writers have that much control over who gets in the Hall of Fame then something is seriously wrong. Who do the media think they are? They can say or do anything to anyone but if that person retaliates or gets angry or doesn't respond in an acceptable manner they get destroyed. I think its a bunch of BS. Greg Maddux has won 5 Cy Young awards. What more do you need?

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

I'd say he's a first ballot hall of famer. HOF loves pitchers. Now if he was a 2nd baseman, probably not (coughRyneSandbergcough).

Cool Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

Maddux is a definite first ballot hall of famer in my opinion.

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

without a doubt a first time hall of famer. He has way too much class, I cannot remember ever reading negative stuff about him, even from opponents

Re: Greg Maddux Retire?

Okay, tough question here - where would everyone rank Maddux in terms of the greatest MLB pitchers of all time? Is he a top 10 guy? Top 20? Would he make your all-time starting rotation?
