Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

This is according to baseball sources from the AP.

Look for the announcement to be made tomorrow with Piniella reportedly getting a three-year contract.

Can Piniella lead the Cubs back to being a serious team in the NL? He can't if Prior/Wood/Lee are always hurt, that's for sure.

Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

I think the Cubs have a lot of talent, and under new management may be able to be a contending team next year. Look, the Cardinals won the division with only 80 wins. Maybe the Cubs could close on that mark next year and win the division...

Geez, wasn't this job all but handed to Girardi on a silver platter? What happened - or was the media way off base?

The Cubs couldn't go wrong with either man. This will probably be Piniella's last managerial job. If he could somehow find a way to break the Cubs' 98-year World Series slump, it would be the crowning achievement of his career. He would be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by acclamation.

Piniella will be no match for the Curse of the Goat. It will eat him up like a tin can and spit him out.

Cool Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

Whatever happened to Lou Piniella wanting to be close to home? That's why Seattle let him out of his deal...

According to Piniella, "there is no curse."

Well last I checked, Chicago is closer to Florida than Seattle

And didn't he say he took care of whatever family stuff he had to while Tampa manager?

I think you need to retake Social Studies class, ThePundit.

The Cubs have the major keys to success but they need the right car to use the keys with.

Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

In no more than four years, the Cubs will win the World Series. I've said for a while now that the Cubs were one piece away from making a run. They'll be good next year- in contention and my favorite to win the central.

Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

With the exception of Zambrano, their starting pitching is pretty bad. Also, their offense scored the second lowest number of runs in the National League in 2006. They have a long way to go before they can contend.

Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

All they need is to get a few scribbles from some of the amazing FA pitchers this off-season and they might be set.

Don't forget that Kerry Wood's contract is over and we can finally say goodbye!

The Cubs want to move Wood into the bullpen. If he can stay healthy, he should be effective there moreso than if he were to return to the rotation.

Thoughts on Wood's Career: He had a rocketship but couldn't touch the stars.

Re: Chicago Cubs Hire Lou Piniella

Dusty Baker overused both Wood and Mark Prior in 2003, and neither of them has ever been really good since.
