The Bulls will honor Johnny ''Red'' Kerr tonight for what is now a Hall of Fame-recognized career.
Kerr will receive the 2009 John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the halftime ceremony. Chicago native Jerry Colangelo, a Hall of Fame member and now vice chairman, will present the award, which is considered the most prestigious presented by the Hall outside of enshrinement.
The award honors coaches, players and contributors whose accomplishments have made an impact on the game.
''It's only fitting that the Hall of Fame recognizes Johnny Kerr as an individual who has given so much to this game,'' Colangelo said. ''His legacy will be part of the Hall's history forever.''
Kerr was the Bulls' coach in their inaugural 1966-67 season and remains the only coach in NBA history to take a first-year team to the playoffs. Since 1975, Kerr has been part of the Bulls' broadcast team.
