Those Blackhawks kids were great again Tuesday, but the team needed much more in a 7-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the United Center.
Patrick Kane, just 18 and playing in his ninth NHL game, had two goals and two assists and was selected the No. 1 star for the third straight game. Jonathan Toews, a year older and in his seventh game, had one goal, and their linemate, Tuomo Ruutu, had three assists and was a plus-3.
The rest of the Hawks? Well, they didn't produce much at all.
''Kane's been our best player, and that [Kane-Ruutu-Toews] line has been our best line by far,'' coach Denis Savard said. ''Our kids were awesome, but we didn't play our best game. We didn't come ready to play.''
The Hawks (5-4-0) seem to have a problem getting up for mid-week Central Division games on their home ice. Last week, they gave up two goals to the St. Louis Blues in the first seven minutes and lost 3-1. On Tuesday, they had a similar start, falling behind 2-0 on goals by Rick Nash and Jiri Novotny with less than three minutes gone.
