Starting job within Orton's reach

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Knowing that the competition for the starting quarterback position will extend into the preseason, Kyle Orton isn’t trying to win the job at this weekend’s minicamp.

After being buried on the depth chart behind Rex Grossman and Brian Griese the past two years, the former Purdue star is just happy to be working with the Bears’ No. 1 offense again.

“I get a lot of reps in practice now, so that helps,” Orton said. “When you’re the three, you’re getting real limited reps. Now that we have a competition and I’m getting equal reps, I feel like I’m getting better every day.”

Orton looked sharp Friday as the Bears kicked off their mandatory three-day minicamp with a non-contact practice. The 6-4, 216-pounder completed several crisp passes to Devin Hester, Brandon Rideau, Rashied Davis, Brandon Lloyd and Cedric Benson, among others.

Orton determined to make most of latest opportunity - Chicago Bears

Oh boy another year of terrible play from the QB position, that makes me happy!!! So what do you think Orton is capable of this year?

He won't win the games, he won't lose the games, he will be a solid starter

I always thought he didn't get a fair shot. He led the team to 10 wins one season then was benched the next. I think he will be the opening week starter.

Re: Starting job within Orton's reach

When he won those 10 games all he did was hand off the ball to Thomas Jones. He couldn't complete a pass to save his life. Last year he was much improved. Much, much improved.

That is becuase Lovie wouldn't let him after he had one awful where he threw 4 picks against that Bengals defense that lead the league in Turnovers. I say with what the Bears have right now Orton is the best choice.

Re: Starting job within Orton's reach

If the offensive line was greatly improved I would agree with that, but right now, with what we have, Orton is our best chance.

If the Bears want to go make or break, all or nothing, and every other anolgy for that I can't think of for that. Now if they want to go the safe route, that will probably win the most games, you go Orton. I say go Orton.

Agreed so much. A few 3rd-down conversions at the right time, TOP and a healthy and rested defense and the Bears would have 3 championships this decade.

I loved seeing Orton in the game, no turnovers, no points but some rest for the defense and lowest PA compaired to any other starter.

Okay, so I made the lowest PA by starting QB up, but I bet if someone checked it would pan out.

All we need is TOP!

You've reconfirmed a good point. Orton knows how to take care of the ball and one or two big completions on key third downs will be the difference in 8-8 or 12-4 this season.

What's this in your signature about Benson and the Lake? All I know is I've seen a fire in Peterson's eye burning much brighter than Benson's eyes.

"3rd and 4 from the 38 - Orton - hand off to Peterson - left - cuts - dives - first down. The Bears advanceing the ball steadily on the ground - eating up the clock on this glorious Sunday at Soldier Field. Yeah Burt the defense has stumped the Pack and the Bears running game has given them plenty of rest today. In true Bears fashion this one will be broken wide open with a field goal at the end of this drive. I agree Tony, last week the Bears did it with a Hester reverse that caught the Vikings off-gaurd. This week it looks like the win is just within reach with a Gould chip shot in the closing seconds."

12-4, NFC Champs and if the D is rested, enthused and all back together when the time comes, World Champions!

Are saying the Bears are going to go 12-4, I'm about the biggest optimist when it comes to the Bears, but this team isn't that good, 7-8, 8-8 at the very best. Orton could take to a .500 record, and maybe second or third in the North, but not the Super Bowl or even the division title.

Yeah, I think 12-4 is going to be a stretch for the Bears, hell I would be surprised by a .500 record this year. I think they will come in around 6-9 or 7-8. I could be wrong, but that is what I see.

It was just the funniest thing I read in a long time. Like he's Walter Payton, or something. Had to make it my signature.

I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, than watching the game you described. Whether, or not I will see that next fall, and what their record will be hinges on one thing. Did they do enough to fix the offensive line? I think no, but I would be happy to be wrong.
