Bears Offer to Make Tommie Harris NFL's Highest-Paid Defensive Tackle, Harris Says No

Two Chicago Bears want to be among the highest-paid players in the NFL, and the team may have trouble meeting their contract demands.

First there's the Brian Urlacher contract situation, and now Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Bears have made an offer to defensive tackle Tommie Harris that would make him the highest-paid defensive tackle in football -- and Harris said no.

According to Biggs, the offer the Bears made is more than the ridiculous $50 million contract Tommy Kelly signed with the Oakland Raiders in February. Kelly is the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league, and Harris apparently wants more than that.

Good grief. How much money does one man need?
Dude, you'd be the highest paid player at your position. Shut up and sign the contract.

Couldn't agree more. What does the dude want? Usually, the athlete says this is about 'respect' but clearly that's not the case here. A team can't respect you any more than to make you the highest paid worker on your particular job. The highest paid DT of all time, for that matter. So clearly this is either Harris wanting out of Chicago, or it's all about the money.

If I were the Bears owner I would take it as an insult, maybe even rethink my offer..

Tommie Harris the core of that defense, when he went down in 2006 the rest of the team looked lost. But Come on Tommie! Just sign the freaking extension.

If I were the Bears I would up the offer but not by much.

They've already offered him enough, and they have too many other things to address to sink all this money on a DT.
Time to start looking for his replacement.

Did they mention why he said no? Or was it just money?

Tommie Harris is one of the two players on the Bears that they can't replace, he is just too important, if they lose him, the defense will fall back drastically.

But if they pay him what he wants, how in the world do they upgrade at QB, RB, etc. ???

A long deal wouldn't hurt the cap as much. Defense wins Championships and he is the core of this defense.

I'm usually the first to tout the necessity of a good defense, but this team has had that, and how many titles do they have to show for it in the past decade? They need to find a way to score points and they can't do that if they overpay this much for a defensive tackle.

Scoring points is important yes but what happens if you can't stop the other team? They score more points. That defense got worst last year and giving up Tommie Harris would just make it worst and besides no matter what QB or RB they get they'll be killed with that O-Line to protect them.

this may all be true but its not the bears fault, its harris, the bears offered him the top salary in the league for his position and its not good enough, leftys right they cant spend the farm on this guy, they have offensive positions that need attention..
