While Bears coach Lovie Smith talked this week about bringing in competition for Cedric Benson, running backs coach Tim Spencer was working toward that goal.

Spencer met with Tulane running back Matt Forte on Thursday in New Orleans, a day after putting Texas' Jamaal Charles through a private workout in Austin. Could the Bears be looking at Charles, who succeeded Benson with the Longhorns, to do the same in Chicago?

Charles left school with a year of eligibility remaining after rushing for 1,619 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. He trails only Ricky Williams, Benson and Earl Campbell on Texas' all-time rushing list and had only 582 offensive touches in college -- less than half as many as Benson (1,181), who stayed in school four years.

Interesting. I can only assume Charles would be a later pick, maybe 2nd or 3rd round? I don't believe he's a first-round talent.

Charles is a projected second round pick on a lot of draft boards, would be a good value at pick 44.

Sure, they need a QB, but they need a RB as well. Among other things.

Guys, it's easier to say what they don't need, they're fine at Tight End, they're fine at Linebacker, they're fine at Defensive End, they could use a defensive tackle or cornerback but if they don't get one that'd be okay too.

Well, all I'm trying to relay is that QB or RB, which ever they get first, it doesn't matter. The need is equal at both positions.

Definitely...though there is a better chance at a good back in latter rounds.

True. It's a deep draft at the position, no doubt, and quite frankly it looks to be a weak-ish one for QBs.

It is their own fault. They had a good RB in Jones, but let him go. They relied on Benson and he let them down.

I don't think Chicago will ever have a great QB. Have they ever had one before.
