| Turnovers were too Little, Too Late ![]() LAKE FOREST, Ill. – While the Bears defense suffered through a disappointing 2007 season, plummeting in the NFL rankings from fifth in 2006 to 28th, the unit improved late in the year. From Weeks 10 through 17, the Bears forced 20 takeaways, tied for the third most in the NFL during that span. The Bears turned those 20 takeaways into 51 points. For the season, the Bears forced 33 takeaways, the eighth most in the NFL, converting them into 64 points. In 2006, the Bears led the NFL with 143 points off of 44 takeaways. The Bears are one of only four teams to finish in the top 10 in the NFL in takeaways in each of the past three seasons after registering sixth in 2005 with 34. Cincinnati, Detroit and Minnesota are the others. Since Lovie Smith became Bears coach in 2004, Chicago ranks second in the NFL with 140 takeaways.
