Wolfe Wants to Build on Solid Rookie Year

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears running back Garrett Wolfe produced when called upon late in the season, but the third-round draft pick from Northern Illinois wasn’t satisfied with his rookie year.
After being elevated to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart following Cedric Benson’s season-ending leg injury, Wolfe rushed for 83 yards on 25 carries in the final six games and caught nine passes for 117 yards, all in the last four contests.

“I’m one of those guys that always wants to do better, so I’m going to say that I feel I could have contributed more in the times that I was out there,” Wolfe said.
“This year wasn’t what anyone imagined, so I think a lot of people feel the same. But as a rookie, I’m excited because I improved a lot over the last 4-5 weeks with increased playing time.”
Gaining a firmer grasp of the offense as the season progressed helped Wolfe immensely. “When things become second nature, that’s when you allow your natural ability to take over,” he said.
“Everything that I’ve been asked to do is stuff that I’ve done before, but the play calls are different. Being in the same system for three years in college, it didn’t take any time for it to register. As soon as it was said, I knew exactly what to do.
“Now I’m working my way into that mode where as soon as it’s said I know exactly where to go and I don’t have to think about it and then go do it.”
In the preseason, Wolfe led the Bears in rushing with 104 yards on 39 carries and in receptions with 11 for 76 yards. But he saw limited action in the first 10 games of the season, rushing for just two yards on six carries before his role expanded after Benson was injured.
