Stability at Quarterback Position Top Priority

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Watching quarterbacks Rex Grossman, Brian Griese and Kyle Orton take turns under center this season made one thing perfectly clear to Bears general manager Jerry Angelo.

“We’ve got to get the position stabilized,” Angelo said after the Bears started at least three quarterbacks for the sixth time in nine seasons.
“I felt going into the year, this was the best we’ve ever been. Each one of them played good football at some point in time. It’s unfortunate that we had to see all three of them again.
“So first and foremost, we have to get the position stabilized going into ’08. That will be determined in the spring and the preseason.”
Grossman passed for 1,411 yards with 4 TDs, 7 interceptions and a 66.4 passer rating in seven starts, Griese threw for 1,803 yards with 10 TDs, 12 interceptions and a 75.6 passer rating in six starts and Orton passed for 478 yards with 3 TDs, 2 interceptions and a 73.9 rating passer in three starts.
While Griese and Orton remain under contract with the Bears through 2010 and 2008, respectively, Grossman is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
“We would like to have Rex back in the mix,” Angelo said. “We’ll talk through that as we get into our meetings with our coaches.

"Rex showed some good play, particularly when he was coming back off his little sabbatical. So we’d like to have as much competition as we can there. But again, we’ve got to get that stabilized. That’s got to be first and foremost.”
If Grossman returns, he likely would have to compete for the starting job in training camp.
“In all likelihood without sitting and talking with the coaches, off the top of my head, it’s got to be competition,” Angelo said. “I don’t see us right now doing anything. Somebody’s got to be first in line, but that will be determined in the offseason.”
Bolstering the quarterback position in free agency or the draft also remains a possibility for the Bears, who ranked 27th in the NFL in total offense and tied for 18th in scoring in 2007.

They don't need a quarter back competition, the job is Orton's. Of their 3 quarterbacks Grossman is still the best, but with the offensive line that they have right now, we need Orton, he can buy some time that the O line is not capable of giving any of the quarterbacks, kind of a poor man's Tony Romo.

That would be what I'd do as well.
