| Bernard Berrian Leads the List of Free-Agent Wide Receivers ![]() With the Cowboys' Patrick Crayton now off the market, and the Patriots' Randy Moss likely to re-sign in New England, the highlight of the wide receiver free-agent draft class is ... Bernard Berrian. Berrian's a nice player, but he's not a game-changer, or even a No.1 receiver. The fourth-year wideout from Fresno State has had back-to-back quality seasons (he hauled in 51 passes for 775 yards and six touchdowns last year, and has 68 receptions for 932 yards and four TDs in 2007), and that'll probably be enough to earn him a Crayton-type payday even though he could've had more than that last off-season: Berrian turned down a contract extension by the Bears in June that had $7.5 million guaranteed. While Crayton will no longer compete with Berrian for free-agent dollars, suitors will point to the contract Crayton received and say he is a No. 2 wideout and tell Berrian he is in the same class. Still, without many other quality receivers available it may not effect Berrian's drive for a big pay day.According to the Chicago Sun-Times' Brad Biggs, two agents were surprised at Crayton's $14-million deal ($6 million guaranteed) feeling he couldn't gotten a lot more on the free-agent market. (Crayton admitted that he loves Dallas and was happy to remain a Cowboy, so that probably had a lot to do with it.) | Re: Bernard Berrian Leads the List of Free-Agent Wide Receivers I think Hester has another year, or two on his contract, but "people" have been talking about it being renegotiated, because he is so phenomenal as a return man. I think Berrian is a great deep threat, though not nearly as fast as he was at the beginning of the 06 season, before his injury. Also it would be nice if he caught the ball more often, that's kind of important. |

| Re: Bernard Berrian Leads the List of Free-Agent Wide Receivers I think Berrian is a star waiting to happen, but with all the other issues facing the Bears, you have too wonder if they can afford to sign Berrian. But at the same time how can they not afford to sign him. Look at the Bears other needs first. 1. QB. Who knows what's going to happen but one thing is not all 3 QB's are going to be back next season. Are the Bears going to give the job to Orton, keep Griese as #2 and let Grossman go? Are they going to let Griese and Grossman go and sign a FA QB to compete with Orton? Will the Bears pony up in a weak draft and offer Cleveland there 1st and 3rd round pick to get D. Anderson? Because I'll tell you this. If I'm Berrian and you are going to tell me that Kyle Orton or Brian Griese is going to be my QB next year, I'm playing some where else. 2. RB. What are the Bears going to do here? Going to bank on Benson again? AP? Wolf? Just about any RB the Bears bring in (if any) is going to cost money. The Bears are going to need too find, or draft a #1 back. I don't think they can go into next season with the same backfield. For crying out loud, the Bears are paying AP to be more of a special teams player than a RB. 3. WR's. Let's say Berrian goes. That leaves Bradley who is signed till 09 (and only caught 5 balls so far this season). Hester who is signed till 09, and is learning the WR position (and will holdout next season if the Bears don't re-do his contract imo). Muhammad who is signed till 2010 and is 34 years old. And you have Hass and Rideau who are both signed till 08. Not to mention that R. Davis is a FA after this season as well. Who's going to be the Bears #1 WR, Mauhammad? It's not looking too good. I agree with azrael. Some team is going to give up the money to get him, and I don't think it will be the Bears. Only because of all the other needs facing the Bears. Also along with what I mentioned up top, the Bears have the Briggs issue with the OL, DT, SS, FS that needs to be addressed. |
