Williams making the Most of Opportunities

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Playing in place of the injured Lance Briggs at weakside linebacker, Jamar Williams earned high marks from coaches for his performance in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers.
“I think he only had 16 plays or so, but out of the 16 plays, half of them he was involved in the play, which is showing quite a bit of production,” said coach Lovie Smith. “I thought Jamar did a good job stepping in for Lance.”

Williams entered the game on Green Bay’s second play from scrimmage and made an impact on his first snap, dropping running back Ryan Grant for no gain. The 2006 fourth-round draft pick from Arizona State tied for the Bears lead with five solo tackles in the game.
“It felt great,” Williams said. “I just wanted to gain confidence, use this year to get better for next year and so on and so on. This game I just tried to take it one play at a time. I was able to make a quick play early in the game, and from there I was able to gain a lot of confidence, and I just tried to play full speed each play.”
If the Bears don’t re-sign Briggs, who’s slated to become an unrestricted free agent in March, Williams would be the odds-on favorite to replace him next season. Playing sparingly on defense this season, the 6-foot, 237-pounder has registered 27 tackles and 1 sack this season.
“The thing about playing linebacker for me anyway is it’s not so much with the learning part because I’m pretty quick with the learning,” Williams said. “It’s just the confidence and being comfortable. And the more I’ve played as the year went on, I’ve just gained confidence and feel more comfortable and now I feel like I can play any position and I can be good at it.”
