That raises the question of how much a top-class return man is worth on the open market. If Devin Hester is the Bears' greatest asset, what would they have to pay to keep him? What would he be worth in trade value? In an offseason that must start with decisions on the futures of quarterback Rex Grossman and linebacker Lance Briggs, the Bears must ask themselves if this is the time to pursue an extension for Hester to ensure they're the ones charting his development for years to come. Hester will have two years left on his rookie contract after this season. With the extra income Hester is generating off the field only growing, he wouldn't have to negotiate a new deal after Year 3 for financial needs. At that point, he might be negotiating against himself if he were to talk long-term with the Bears. This offseason might be the time to strike, and it will take creative thinking.
