Rex Grossman Won't Need Surgery, Will the Bears Re-Sign Him Now?

At 5-8 and sitting in last place in the division, the Bears' season is effectively over. In addition to entering "playing for pride" territory the next four weeks, during last night's Redskins game, the club also lost starting quarterback Rex Grossman to a nasty-looking knee injury, putting his future in Chicago in doubt.

Today, though, there's some good news on the Grossman front. What almost certainly looked like one of those injuries that would require surgery and a grueling eight-month rehab will apparently require neither:
It looked much worse as he walked off the field Thursday night but Rex Grossman will not face surgery after the nasty knee injury suffered against the Washington Redskins, sources told the Tribune Friday.

An MRI revealed that the medial collateral ligament wasn't torn but merely sprained. The difference could keep Grossman in Chicago if the Bears determine that the month-long recovery time is worth a risk.
Grossman still won't play again this season, but the soon-to-be free agent could be in the teams' plans now that the injury isn't as bad as originally feared. This is sure to bring mixed reactions from Bears' fans, many of whom have suffered through plenty of EVIL REX moments the past few seasons.

Too bad, Grossman appears to be done as a Bear.

Sooner or later, a team has to cut their losses. You don't want to become the Ravens, desperately clinging to a false hope with Kyle Boller.

They should have cut their losses when he couldn't stay healthy his first two years.

Cut, Griese he takes up to much cap room, don't re-sign Rex Grossman. Keep Orton as third stringer. Sign Chad Pennington and draft a QB in the first round

Chad Pennington? First off, he's under contract next year so they would have to trade for him and I don't think he's the answer, anyway. Berrian is a terrific receiver - they need someone who can get the ball to him down the field.

Berrian is a free agent after the season.

No, I agree - Pennington's not an upgrade from what you have now, and you'd need to cough something up for him in the trade. Definitely look for someone in the draft, but you need a capable veteran, a Trent Dilfer type. Or alternatively, contact the Browns and see if you can land Brady Quinn. I mean, why not? What have you got to lose?

I would love to have Brady Quinn, I would ship our first round pick to Cleveland if we could get him.

A good comparison Lefty... I guess more teams should take the Dallas route and groom their QB for a few years.

Thanks. So often QBs are rushed in too early when they should be groomed.

People forget that those who start from day one and find success are the exception, not the rule, in the National Football League.

Yeah, and getting thrown in a big market like Chicago is not gonna help...I hope they are more patient with the next kid...heck they threw Orton in there before he was ready as well.

Re: Rex Grossman Won't Need Surgery, Will the Bears Re-Sign Him Now?

hopefully the bears give Ortin a chance. If I remember right didn't he step in for Grossman a couple seasons ago and win like 4 out of 5. (I remember because they swept my Lions that season with him at the helm.) What do they have to lose, give the guy a chance, He's been grooming for what, four years or so. I do agree signing a veteran would be a plus, maybe Carson Palmer I think he's looking to leave the Bengals. I don't expect the Bears to re-sign Grossman though I'd definitely lose Greise. I think I would also try to get a premiere running back. They had something special with the one two punch with Jones and Benson, Jones being the one and Benson being the two.
