Last month FanHouse's Josh Alper noted that the Bears may work on a new contract for return man Devin Hester, but that it's hard to determine how much a player like Hester is worth: He is, after all, a rather unique talent.

Last night on NFL Network, Adam Schefter reported that Hester has two more years on his contract, that he's one of the most underpaid players in the league at less than $500,000 a year, and that he believes he deserves more. So will this become a sticky situation?

One thing that works in Hester's favor is that last night he had by far his most complete game as a receiver, catching five passes for 67 yards. This wasn't just the "Hester, go long" strategy, it was a "Hester, run routes like you're an actual wide receiver" strategy. It didn't always work -- both of Brian Griese's interceptions were on passes intended for Hester -- but it did indicate that the Bears no longer just think of him as the best return man in the NFL, they also think of him as a real wide receiver.

And if you're a real wide receiver who's also the best return man in the NFL,ever, you're worth way, way more than $500,000 a year. Maybe 10 times that. So even though the two years left on his contract give the Bears the leverage, expect Hester to get paid.

Hester should be one of the top paid players for the Bears, he scores all their points..

everyone in the nfl is overpaid. 500Gs sounds good to me

Naw...they have shorter lifespans, careers, and medical problems...they are for the most part not overpaid...especially in Hester's case, where the next big hit makes him a use car salesman of sort...

Sadly yes...nothing against our boys that defend this country...but there is a shortage of guys who run 4.2-43 40's and can return kicks like that...and our society has placed a value on the game...on the other hand, history shows there is always a segment of society that for better or worse will do the bulk of the fighting in a war.

Wow, this conversation has taken an interesting turn. It's sad how much value our society places on being entertained and thus paying our entertainers (which includes athletes). No way they should be making more than the people who defend our country, teach our children, care for our sick or do any of the really important things that keep our country up and running. But hey, that's just me.

I don't know about that but in the NFL Devin Hester is worth a lot to the Chicago Bears so they should lock him up with the big buckaroos and work on his receiving skills if they want to use him that way.
