Just when Cedric Benson was turning the corner to acceptability, the Bears running back's season was ended and his future cast in doubt.
The No. 4 pick from the 2005 draft will undergo surgery to repair a fractured left leg near the ankle, an injury not unlike what Rex Grossman went through in '05, according to a source close to Benson.
If they didn't already have to embark on an offseason journey to find a running back, the Bears sure do now.
It's one thing for a quarterback to come back from the injury that will involve a plate being inserted. It's another for a back to undergo the procedure and face the grueling rehabilitation that will be required to once again cut, turn and accelerate on the leg. There already were enough questions about his ability to do just that this season.

Can't give you a name. The Broncos came up with a running back that was a nobody. Our practice squad, somebody else's practice squad. There has to be more out there, they just have to find one, now. We just need someone NOW. What if Peterson goes down in the first quarter against the Giants? I just think they are taking their sweet time, and it's going to bite them in the rear end.
