| Lovie to stick with the run The lip-reading services of Brian Griese were not needed to understand Lovie Smith's message clearly. Grilled about a running game that is kindly described as plodding, the Bears coach maintained his course with renewed enthusiasm. ''We're a team that gets off the bus running the football,'' Smith said Wednesday. ''I have it memorized, and that's what we are, period.'' The thinking is that if the Bears keep pounding away, they'll eventually find a defense that breaks. Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field would figure to be an opportune time. In fact, if Cedric Benson can't bust out then, you have to wonder if he will this season. The Lions are ranked 19th against the run. Smith had been asked if the Bears would change their philosophy and go with more of a pass-first approach, given the success they've had with Griese. ''We start out running the football, and then from there, you have to take what a team gives you,'' Smith said. ''You're trying to win the game whatever way. I like seeing our receivers catch the ball, too, but still there has to be a foundation for your team, for your offense. Our foundation is the run.'' Lovie's not about to jump off the run bus

| Re: Lovie to stick with the run If they want to win they have to stay with the run. I have heard some comments on the radio, about who cares about tradition, we should throw more. Playbook NFC edition this week with Baldinger said the same thing. First off, no we don't have a great running back, running game, but it's good enough. The success in passing would not be possible without the running game we have right now. Now that the passing game is having success, I would say Cedric Benson should have his best game of the year so far. Like I said it's like turning on an old TV, and waiting for it to warm up. If they listen to Baldinger, and just throw, we will be back to where we were at the start of the season. A lot of 3, and out, and lots of interceptions, just a different quarterback. |
