Orton: I'm not a canidate for the starting QB job

Bears quarterback Kyle Orton is not worried about being called on to start if Brian Griese fails, as Rex Grossman did before him.
''Right now, I'm still No. 3,'' Orton said. ''So I don't know what to say. I'm not going to probably be playing this week. Hopefully, Brian goes out and plays a great game, and until I'm told otherwise, I just go about it trying to get better from week to week in my own personal game.''
‘‘I just do what I’m told, and when I’m out there, I try to win football games,’’ Kyle Orton said of being the Bears’ third-string quarterback.
A 13-3 regular season in 2006, followed by a trip to the Super Bowl, had Bears fans expecting far better than a 1-3 start from a team that returned basically intact.

But it was only two years ago when the Bears last stumbled to a 1-3 start, and Orton was the starting quarterback as a rookie. At that time, Grossman, the anticipated starter, was injured for the third consecutive year, and Griese was the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, guiding the team to a 5-1 start before being sidelined by a knee injury.
''That's why I know we can make a comeback,'' wide receiver Rashied Davis said. ''We followed that 1-3 start with an eight-game win streak and made the playoffs with an 11-5 record.''
Orton set rookie records with 15 starts, 10 wins, 368 pass attempts, 190 completions and 1,869 yards and tied a record with nine touchdown passes. But once Grossman was healthy enough to start, coach Lovie Smith replaced Orton with the former first-round pick, and the Bears lost to the Carolina Panthers 29-21 in the NFC divisional playoffs.

Orton waits in wings again
