| Payne put on IR; Gattis promoted from practice squad LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears’ depleted secondary took another hit Tuesday when rookie safety Kevin Payne was placed on injured reserve with a broken arm sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. The fifth-round draft pick from Louisiana-Monroe recorded six tackles on defense and two on special teams in three games. With all four of the Bears’ starting defensive backs sidelined with injuries, Payne made his first NFL start against the Lions. Safety Adam Archuleta (hand) and cornerbacks Charles Tillman (ankle) and Nate Vasher (groin) were all injured a week earlier in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Safety Mike Brown was lost for the season when he tore the ACL in his left knee in a Week 1 defeat to the San Diego Chargers. The Bears filled Payne’s roster spot by promoting rookie safety Josh Gattis from the practice squad. Gattis was selected in the fifth round of the draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In four seasons at Wake Forest, Gattis recorded 12 interceptions while starting 33 of 48 games played. He earned All-ACC first-team honors and was an All-America honorable mention as a senior after recording five interceptions and 73 tackles. Bears place Payne on IR, promote Gattis
