| Now it is Turner? Without Rex Grossman to kick around anymore, the Bears' problems on offense fall back on one man. No, it's not Cedric Benson. Or Brian Griese. The guy on the spot now is offensive coordinator Ron Turner, a candidate for the head coaching job in Miami last year, whose name has turned to Mud -- or perhaps Norv -- while the Bears' offense has dropped to 30th in the 32-team NFL. ''I have been in this business too long to worry about what people are saying,'' Turner said. ''I know last year when we had some games where we threw for a lot of yards and scored a lot of points, I looked at it and said I didn't really call a very good game, but guys made a bunch of plays. Other times I looked at it and thought it was one of my better games called, but we didn't do much. ''All you can do is go out and do your best. We have good players, and we need to start playing better. If we start playing better, all that will take care of itself.'' Quarterback play will be front-and-center among topics of discussion heading into Sunday's NFC North opener at Detroit. But the real issue will be coaching, more so this week than any other. Turner has to get Griese ready to start for the first time in two years. Lovie Smith and his defensive coordinator, Bob Babich, have to figure out a way to limit the Lions' big-play offense without the benefit of starting cornerbacks Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman. Lions coach Rod Marinelli has to get his defense to clean up the myriad mistakes it made in a 56-21 loss to Philadelphia. Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz has to keep his unit operating at a high level and exploit the mismatches against the battered Bears. True? • Focus shifts to Turner

| Re: Now it is Turner? Oh, for cryin' out loud. They've got a mediocre, streaky QB that they've just replaced and a running back who clearly isn't starting material, and they want to throw the coach under the bus. Seriously, look at the game film. Is it the playcalling that's costing them? NO! It's the execution, plain and simple. You could have someone like Bill Walsh or Charlie Weis scripting the offense and it still wouldn't make a lick of difference if the players aren't that talented and aren't getting the job done.
