| Griese to replace Grossman The NFL Network's Adam Schefter has confirmed that Brian Griese will start at quarterback Sunday for the Chicago Bears. Griese will replace Rex Grossman, who threw three interceptions as the Chicago Bears fell to the Dallas Cowboys 34-10 on Sunday night and did not get a vote of confidence from his coach a day later. "Will Rex Grossman start Sunday?" coach Lovie Smith asked on Monday, repeating the question. "Well, our evaluation process is going on right now, and if you come out to practice Wednesday, you'll have a better idea of who will be starting at all positions." Smith gave his usual answer when asked Sunday night about Grossman -- "Rex Grossman is our quarterback" -- but his tone was different on Monday, fueling speculation Brian Griese might start Sunday against Detroit. Grossman's supporters would have a hard time arguing against the move, considering he ranks 23rd in the league with 500 yards, has a 45.2 passer rating and is 47-of-89 (52.8 percent) with a league-leading six interceptions and just one touchdown. But is Griese the answer? A Pro Bowl pick with Denver in 2000, he has passed for 16,564 yards, but has also been released three times -- by the Broncos, Miami and Tampa Bay. "I have confidence in our entire football team," Smith said. "Brian is a part of that. After you have a loss like that, we all feel bad. We should." And Smith realizes something needs to change -- quickly. At 1-2, the Bears are certainly not living up to those soaring expectations after last season's Super Bowl appearance. Besides Grossman's struggles, injuries are mounting. They lost former Pro Bowl safety Mike Brown and starting nose tackle Dusty Dvoracek to season-ending knee injuries in the opener at San Diego. And on Sunday, Bears were falling like dominoes. Linebacker Lance Briggs (groin), cornerback Nathan Vasher (groin) and defensive tackle Tommie Harris (knee) all left the game with injuries. Offensive lineman Ruben Brown suffered what was announced as a game-ending ankle injury, although he returned near the end. "All of these injuries we're evaluating right now," Smith said. "I can't give you anything else." As for the evaluation at quarterback, Grossman's troubles are well-documented and they explain why the Bears let him enter this season with an expiring contract rather than an extension. He was the NFC Offensive Player of the Month last September. Now, he may not be the starting quarterback when September ends. There certainly is blame to pass around, but the focus is on the quarterback. The Bears were hoping Grossman would play the way he did the first five weeks last season and ditch the inconsistency he showed the rest of the way I got to think it is the right move agree ? Griese to replace Grossman at QB for Bears

| Re: Griese to replace Grossman No doubt it is the right move. They gave him a chance and he blew it. At the same time though I don't think Ron Turner has helped much either with some piss poor play calling. And doesn't this new QB coach get some blame as well? |

| Re: Griese to replace Grossman I agree that there is definitely enough blame to go around, but they need to do something to try and get things turned around. A QB change is usually the first thing coaches turn to for that spark, and Grossman has been universally criticized for a while now. It makes sense. They need to find a running game too though. Less than 3.0 yards per carry is not acceptable.

| Re: Griese to replace Grossman It's not helping either when Benson puts the ball on the ground and the coaching staff doesn't put him back into the game because of it. I don't think the Bears have any confidence in either of their backs. Not only are the Bears going to be looking for a new QB, but a RB as well. I hope the Bears have a lot of cap money, because they are going too need it. |

| Re: Griese to replace Grossman And they should have. It's all been said before, but it's gotta be said again. When Grossman was drafted it was under Jauron and Shoop. Then Lovie came in with a new OC. maybe someone can help, but I think there was another OC before Turner came back, but I could be wrong on that. But add in that Grossman was hurt in his first 3 seasons, and not to mention 2,3, different QB coaches in a very short time. Please take into account Grossman coming in late in the 05 season and just coming up short against the Panthers to move on to the NFCCG against Seattle. Follow that up with losing the Super bowl the following year. Now after all of that, and Grossman only starting 20 some games in 4 years you are going to tell me you are going to come out and tell the fans and media that you are going to let Rex go? You can't do that and you know it. The Bears let Grossman know in the off season that he was going to have to improve. That's why he didn't get a new deal last year. The Bears said show me what you can do next year, and if it's good, we'll re-sign you. If not, you are out the door. It looks like he's on his way out the door. If you were to ask me the Bears went about this the right way. Just like when Jerry Angelo took over. Dick Jauron had just won coach of the year. It seemed that everyone in the media was saying that Angelo didn't want Jauron as the head coach, but he couldn't fire him because he just won coach of the year. And he knew if he would have fired him there would have been a backlash from that. So Angelo waited until the next season when they didn't do as well, and Angelo told Jauron that he had to let Shoop go. Jauron said no. Angelo now has a reason to let Jauron go. Just like the Bears now have a reason to let Grossman go. Like it or not. That's how you do it. I guess if you are another QB say like Matt Leinart AKA "Love fest" who has been under different type of coaching changes you get a pass though, Right? You beat up one guy, and love the other for doing the same type of things. It might be just like saying David Carr is better than Joey Harrington. |
