| Lovie not postive about Rex next week? The words Lovie Smith did not utter Monday afternoon made it clear change is likely afoot at Halas Hall. After backing Rex Grossman since the day he got his job, Smith finally has been backed against the wall himself. No longer did he use the well-worn line ''Rex is our quarterback,'' and an announcement is expected Wednesday that Brian Griese is taking over. The only question remaining will be if Grossman is No. 2, or if Kyle Orton will bypass him. As much as Smith has tried to steady the position that has been rocked by upheaval in the last decade, he can stay the course no longer. Grossman's streak of 19 consecutive regular-season starts will probably end Sunday at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions and the Bears will change starting quarterbacks for the 31st time in the last 127 games, a dizzying pace in which 11 others have preceded Griese. ''Our evaluation process is going on right now,'' Smith said. ''If you come out to practice Wednesday, you'll have a better idea of who will be starting at all positions.'' When asked if he had made a decision and he simply did not want to share it, Smith responded: ''I'm always thinking ahead, yes.'' The message to Grossman was picked up by most in the aftermath of the Bears' victory over the Kansas City Chiefs a week earlier: clean up your act, or else. When he threw three interceptions in Sunday night's embarrassing 34-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on national television, the decision was all but made for Smith. Grossman's poor play is only part of the story for the league's 30th-ranked offense. Bernard Berrian dropped a sure touchdown. Cedric Benson lost a fumble for the second time in three games, and Muhsin Muhammad appeared to stop on a route resulting in one of the interceptions. But the quarterback has the best handle on the turnover ratio, and that is the most precious of statistics to Smith. Including the playoffs last season, Grossman has committed 33 turnovers in the last 17 games. With a banged up defense that could potentially be missing nearly half the starters from Week 1, ball security becomes an even greater issue and as a 63 percent career passer, Griese represents a more stable option. End of the line for Rex? I honestly think you have to go to Greise if you want to have a chance at the Super Bowl

| Re: Lovie not postive about Rex next week? I voted for Griese, but only because the sooner they put him in, the sooner they will take him out. Unless they change pretty much everything, not abandoning the running game when it's working, receivers not stopping mid route, receivers start catch balls that bounce of their numbers. If everything else doesn't change it will be worse, not better. I'm hoping everyone gets over this Griese love affair quick, so Rex will be back in time to win against Green Bay. |

While it appeared otherwise to some, receiver Muhsin Muhammad insisted that he was not at fault for Grossman’s first interception against the Cowboys. “I came out of the break, I didn’t come out slow or dragging or nothing like that,” Muhammad said. “I came out of the break and the ball was … like Rex said the timing might have been off on it a little bit. Rex might have thrown it a little earlier than he wanted to or whatever. “I’m not sure. I’m not sure exactly how they see it. But the way I see it, I came out of my break and the ball was in front of me quite a bit. I made every effort to try to get to the ball to at least bat it or make a swing at it, and I couldn’t touch it.” |
