Urlacher Fined for Super Bowl Hat

Urlacher Fined $100,000 for Super Bowl Hat Last Edited: Wednesday, 18 Apr 2007, 4:44 PM CDTCreated: Wednesday, 18 Apr 2007, 4:44 PM CDT
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league.
NFL rules prohibit gear that advertises any product but a designated sponsor, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday.
Urlacher was fined for drinking vitaminwater and wearing a vitaminwater hat during the media session in Miami leading to the title game. Gatorade is the NFL's official drink.
McCarthy said this is the first time such a fine has been levied. He added that $100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl.
The fine recalls an episode involving Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon in the playoffs following the 1985 season, the previous time the Bears made the Super Bowl.
McMahon wore a headband that said "adidas" in a playoff game against the New York Giants, and then-commissioner Pete Rozelle fined him $5,000 because the shoe company was not an NFL sponsor. The following week, in the NFC title game against the Los Angeles Rams, McMahon wore a headband that read "rozelle."

Thank goodness the NFL's there to make sure no one wears the wrong HAT! I mean, yeesh... it look them years and years to develop a personal conduct policy, but they fine a guy the instant he has a uniform violation or something. They really are become the fashion police of pro sports, aren't they?

They could do without the person conduct policy because that was not hurting their bottom line. They were afraid of losing Gatorade as a sponser. I would bet anything the motivation behind the conduct policy is that sponsers were getting nervous about their image being attached to teh NFL.

Darn tootin' it's too much. Meanwhile, look at all the praise baseball's getting for being more flexible with uniform rules lately, with the Jackie Robinson tribute, the possible Larry Dobe one and the Virginia Tech caps. The NFL is way, way too strict on things, and technically this wasn't even a uniform violation. It was during a press event. Guys can't even wear what they want to talk to the media now?

That and the fact that Urlacher is part of the image they want to get across...I mean they hung this ambassador for the sports out to dry.

Crack down on the guys tarnishing the image...but this guy is a crew cut throw back to the old day...let him be on this type of crap.

Theres a difference in paying homage to a baseball legend and to the people who died at va tech. Urlacher was using his cap for sponser money. But I do agree picking on urlacher isnt right because he is a step above most in his proffesional manner. But it is the nfl, while you take the good ,you have to take the bad as well. I do agree with bears9 vitiman water should pay the fine..

Right, I agree with that. But they wouldn't let Jake Plummer pay tribute to Pat Tillman either, because the NFL rules are one-size-fits-all, no possibility of exception. That needs to change, and so does the excessive penalties for uniform violations. That's all I'm saying.

I agree...and what sport in their right mind, and needing positive role models would turn down a tribute to the Pat Tillman?...That's dumb to say the least.

I agree that does need to change. When a player who left to support our country in war and he cant be honored by players wanting to with their uniforms, something aint right. Sadly I doubt the nfl will change the rule..
