Bears? Briggs is unlikely to get new deal

CHICAGO – The standoff between Lance Briggs and the Chicago Bears took another turn Saturday, when General Manager Jerry Angelo said he wants the Pro Bowl linebacker to return next season but a multiyear contract is unlikely.

“I’m not ruling it out 100 percent, but in all probability, that’s not likely to happen,” Angelo said during the team’s fan convention.

The Bears and Briggs have been at odds since the team slapped the franchise player tag on him in mid-February.

Briggs threatened to sit out the season, then agent Drew Rosenhaus said his client would sit out the first 10 games and report for the final six to qualify as serving one year as a franchise player.

Meanwhile, the Washington Redskins offered the sixth pick in the draft for Briggs and the Redskins’ No. 31 selection.

“We’ll digest what they offered Monday and we’ll go from there,” Angelo said, adding no other team has made an offer.

Bears GM: No trade talks for Briggs

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo denied the team has been involved in trade talks regarding Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs,who has threatened to hold out if he doesn't get a long-term contract.

"I've not heard anything official from anybody," Angelo said Tuesday.

Several reports claimed a handful of teams besides Washington have talked to the Bears about trading for Briggs, who is guaranteed $7.2 million as Chicago's franchise player.

Briggs wants to be traded or receive a long-term contract. The Redskins last month offered the Bears their sixth pick overall in the draft for Briggs and the Bears' 31st overall pick. The deal reportedly fell through when the Bears also wanted another player.

Yep, looks like Briggs isn't going anywhere. Now to see if he plays at all for Chicago this season.

I saw on the NFL Network that Drew Rosenhaus was in Chicago to do the Olsen signing, they also have re-opened contract talks with Briggs. If this is true it's real good news.

I think everytime the Bears had a pick in the draft they traded down. I couldn't figure out why they got the Jets #2 and than traded it down. Than I thought about it. Lower round draft choices don't cost as much as high picks. I think they drafted that way to saved money to offer Vasher, Briggs, and Tillman new contracts, guy's who they know can play. At least I hope that was the thinking behind it. LOL! Come on get this deal done, get everyone into camp, and let's win it all this year!!!

That is good news for the Bears. They really need to pay this guy and keep him around.
