Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

On Sunday, February 4, the Chicago Bears will meet the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. It's been a little more than two decades since the Monsters of the Midway won Super Bowl XX. Will this year's edition of Da Bears be able to beat the Colts? Can the defense handle Peyton Manning and the explosive Indianapolis offense? Which Rex Grossman will show up? Can Chicago exploit the apparent weakness in the Indy kick coverage team? Bears fans, this is the place to discuss your team as they prepare for the big game. What will it take for Lovie Smith, Brian Urlacher and company to claim the Vince Lombardi trophy this season?

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

Quick question. Who was/is better going into their respective Super Bowls? Rex Grossman or Trent Dilfer?

SUPER BOWL XLI Bears are looking to finish the job Chicago is ...
San Francisco Chronicle, CA - 28 minutes ago
(01-29) 04:00 PST Miami -- When the Chicago Bears' plane landed Sunday, the players let out a resounding cheer.

Returning to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years, the Bears arrived with smiles and laughter, the portrait of a relaxed team.

Even coach Lovie Smith joked about how he flipped through the Indianapolis Colts' media guide on the three-hour flight from chilly Chicago to the palm trees of south Florida.

"I looked at 18 pages of Peyton Manning," Smith said. "That kind of tells you what we have in store for us."

The underdog role is one that's been embraced with a giant bear hug.

Despite a better record than the Colts and a higher seed, the Bears (15-3) are more than comfortable about being a seven-point underdog to Indianapolis (15-4).

Depends.

Trent Dilfer didn't have the great games Grossman put together at times. However, he didn't have the terrible games Grossman had at times either. Dilfer was consistently solid yet unspectacular. Grossman is wild.

Well, for my money, I'd rather have a guy who was solid but unspectacular than a guy with peaks and valleys. At least with Dilfer, you have a know quantity -- he's a game manager who runs your offense and minimizes mistakes. With Grossman, you never quite know what you're getting from week to week.

Post Bears don't sweat Colts' no-huddle offense

Up to the minute news about the Chicago Bears from GoTeamsGo. We'll find the latest Chicago Bears news so you can chat about here.

Quote:
Bears don't sweat Colts' no-huddle offense
Xinhua, China - 2 hours ago
BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- The Chicago Bears rode their defense all the way to Super Bowl XLI and they're confident that defense will ride roughshod Sunday over the Indianoplis Colts' hurry-up, no-huddle offense.

The Bears know quarterback Peyton Manning will bring the Colts to the line of scrimmage almost immediately after the previous play ends, scan the Bear defensive set, and select a play designed to bewilder and confuse.

But Chicago defensive players say they won't panic.

"I mean it's just you don't get a chance to huddle up," cornerback Nathan Vasher said. "We have signals, other ways of getting different defenses. We don't have to just stay in the same defense when they go no-huddle. I think that's a luxury we have as a defense and we practice on that. This won't be the first no-huddle team we played this season, and I think we'll adjust to it well, just to go out and make plays."

The Bears will need to make those plays at times without being able to substitute. They'll have to adjust to the hurry-up tempo Manning and his mates crave. Their most formidable obstacle will be trying to out-guess and/or out-think the master of the no-huddle offense.

Cool Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

I would rather have Grossman going into the Super Bowl. Say what you want about Grossman, but he's still 16-3 this year. Not too shabby.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

I take Grossman too ...

If the Bears are down ... Grossman definitely has the confidence and the ability to bring you back.

People need to give him some slack .. how many games has he played in now? .. under 20?

I agree that Grossman may wind up having a better career than Dilfer when all is said and done, but the question was about confidence heading into their respective Super Bowls. In that department, the edge goes to the tested, veteran game manager over the promising, young but inconsistant rookie.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

I like Rex ... I am a Bears fan all of my life.

I like the idea of the team behind Rex the way they are.

Lovie backs Rex, the team backs Rex, I back REx.

Like the other post said ... the Bears are 16-3 ... good enough for me!

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

They're backing Rex because they have no other choice. Week 17, Lovie isn't about to bet the starting QB of a 13-3 team.

Rex won't win them the game. He'll either lose it or play well enough to where the run game or defense can win.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

which is exactly what Dilfer would have done!

If Rex plays well enough so that the defense, special teams and running game win the game ... I will be thrilled!

They did have a choice too .. they have Brian Griese and Kyle Orton.

Both qb's have shown they can win ... Orton was 10-2 or so last year with the Bears and Griese has been in the league a while and won with TB and Denver.

Bottom line is that the future of the Bears rests with Rex. Good or bad, he is their man. I respect Lovie 100% for sticking with him, even when he was struggling.

Rex will end up being a very good qb in the NFL for years to come. He just needs a lot more experience.

I think he will play well vs. Indy .. and prove all his doubters wrong ...

So far he has done that vs. Seahawks and Saints ... who everyone had picked to beat the Bears ...

We are still in it though.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

Can the Bears offense produce though? The Colts run defense has been stout all post-season long. If Thomas Jones doesn't have a good day, can Grossman start anything through the air and get the Colts D thinking?

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

Well obviously I was wrong ...

The Colts defense really stopped the bears.

I was pretty disappointed in the first half play calling on the Bears side. It appeared to me that they were afraid to let Rex throw the ball.

He showed why a couple of times. He did not have a good game at all.
I still think Rex will end up being a quality qb. The bad part about this game is that he will have to wait until next year to redeem himself.

If the Bears had to lose, at least they lost to a class team with Dungy and Peyton Manning. Those two ... and many other on the team, are first class individuals ...Congrats Colts.

Re: Super Bowl XLI - Chicago Bears thread

Yeah, tough loss for the Bears... all those turnovers are killers, and as good as that defense was, there was no way they could stay on the field for 10 play drive after 10 play drive. Grossman may yet be a solid NFL QB, but I think yesterday proved he has a long way to go.
