Yeah, I'm sure Lovie isn't entering panic mode. He'll have a ton of options next year if Chicago doesn't take care of business. Barring a disasterous season, Smith as a coaching free agent would jump immediately to #1 on everyone's list of candidates. He'll get his payday one way or another.

Lovie Smith will meet one-on-one with Chicago Bears president Ted Phillips as early as Wednesday to discuss a contract extension for the head coach of the NFC champions.

Smith, who is represented by agent Frank Bauer, is entering the final year of a four-year contract that is set to pay him $1.45 million in 2007, which would make him the lowest-paid coach in the NFL.

The Bears took the stance before the season began that they wanted to see how the team performed in 2006 before extending Smith. After Chicago's 13-3 regular season, it was expected that Smith would be rewarded -- rapidly.
