| Re: Panthers' defense plays tough CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers defense, expected to be one of the best in the NFL again this season, got off to a smashing start in Saturday night's exhibition opener at home against Buffalo.
Playing only the first quarter, the starting defense held the Bills to no points, no first downs and 21 yards on 11 plays. The Panthers claimed a 14-13 victory.
Two of the defense's biggest stars had big plays.
Defensive end Julius Peppers roared in from the left side to sack Buffalo quarterback Kelly Holcomb for a 7-yard loss on the opening possession.
Cornerback Ken Lucas intercepted a Holcomb throw and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes, 40seconds left in the period.
Lucas said he was happy but not satisfied.
"We could've done better," he said. "They had positive rushing yards but it could've been negative. There's always room for improvement."
Peppers said the Panthers' defensive play was "decent." I would be a lot more impressed if it had been any other team but the Bills...a weak line plus Peppers equals a sack all the time...How high in Fantasy Football should the Panthers be rated? |
