Today in the
Charlotte Observer, Stan Olson offered up
a statistical analysis of DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams, explaining how Williams did so much better in the second half of games because Foster wore down defenses in the first half, and how the Carolina Panthers were always better with a big bruiser like Stephen Davis. It's all very reasoned and very efficient.
It's also completely full of crap.
Why are so many people so eager to discount the possibility that Williams could be the Panthers' feature back? Does nobody remember what he accomplished at Memphis? Didn't new offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson redesign the running game so that a smaller back like Williams could be a real threat in the open field?
Just look at the Panthers' last three games. Williams gained 259 total yards on 48 touches, a 5.4 yards per carry/catch average, and scored three touchdowns. Foster, meanwhile, got only 3.5 yards per touch and did not score.
Yet popular sentiment is that the Panthers' running game just can't succeed with a 5-9, 217-pound feature back. I've got two names for everyone who believes that -- Brian Westbrook and Warrick Dunn.
